Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist
Dr Bryan Youl is a Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist who mainly carries out Nerve Conduction and Electromyography studies, as part of the investigation of peripheral nerve and muscle conditions.
If you have been referred for neurophysiological testing, please refer (below) to the test(s) requested by your healthcare professional for further information and for details as to how to arrange an appointment.
If you have a cardiac pacemaker or indwelling defibrillation device, or if you are taking anticoagulant / blood thinning medications, please tell Dr Youl at the start of the appointment. None of these situations should present a problem, however.
Please continue to take all your current medications as prescribed by your doctor.
This testing is carried out by Dr Youl at a range of hospitals (see table below for contact details). Usually, NCS and EMG are both required. The relevant insurance codes employed are either 22023 or NP045, depending on the insurance company. These codes are equivalent.
Fees meet the guidelines of the major insurers. Insured patients should ensure that their insurer is prepared to authorise the carrying out of the procedure at your preferred hospital before you make an appointment. Please bring along both your membership number and your authorisation code to your appointment. A separate consultation fee is never charged and the procedure will be carried out there and then (maximum duration 20 minutes).
Self-paying patients should note the following total costs (combining Dr Youl's procedure fee plus the hospital's charge as a total fee) at the respective hospitals.
In all cases, please ring your preferred hospital (see table of clinics times, below) to arrange an appointment.
NB For those occasional patients with a possible diagnosis of Myaesthenia Gravis, single fibre EMG will be required. This entails the use of specialised equipment and Dr Youl can only carry out these studies at the Wellington Hospital. Please email him if this proves to be a difficulty, in which case he will suggest an alternative arrangement. It might well be, for example, that excellent colleagues working at hospitals covered by the insurer can be recommended for this specific test.
These tests are generally requested by neurologists and ophthalmologists. They come in three forms (Visually Evoked Potentials, Somatosensory Evoked Potentials and Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials, abbreviated to VEPs, SSEPs and BAEPs respectively). These studies are carried out by expert physiologist technicians at the Spire Bushey Hospital and the Wellington Hospital. The findings are then interpreted by Dr Youl.
Fees meet the guidelines of the major insurers. Insured patients should ensure that their insurer is prepared to authorise the carrying out of the procedure at your preferred hospital before making an appointment.
Please bring along both your membership number and your authorisation code to your appointment.
Self-paying patients should ring the Wellington Hospital for a quotation (the single amount quoted will cover Dr Youl's fee and the hospital charge as a combined total figure), but if your preferred location is the Spire Bushey Hospital please send an email to Dr Youl, stipulating which tests have been requested, for a comprehensive quotation.
Dr Youl only carries out these studies at the Wellington Hospital. Self-paying patients should ring the Wellington directly on 0207 483 5017 for a quotation. Insured patients should also approach the Wellington for the relevant procedure code and practical information. No consultation fee is charged. Please bring along both your membership number and your authorisation code to your appointment.
Dr Youl will be happy to refer patients on to colleagues able to carry out this procedure elsewhere if the Wellington Hospital's fees are not covered by the insurance company.
This test is carried out at Spire Bushey hospital (020 8901 5555) by an expert physiologist technician and then reported on by Dr Youl.
